As part of the UC3M India Week, this session offers an introduction to contemporary Indian cinema led by Bina Paul, one of the most renowned professionals in India’s audiovisual sector, followed by a screening of *Victoria*, a film directed by Sivaranjini that has won awards at international film festivals.

The event will begin with a lecture by Bina Paul on Indian cinema, in which she will discuss her professional experience and some of the key ways to approach an extraordinarily diverse cinematic tradition, characterized by multiple languages, regional film industries, narrative traditions, and new auteur perspectives.

Next up is Victoria (2024), a Malayalam-language film directed by Sivaranjini that centers on a young beautician from a small town and the family, religious, and personal conflicts she faces in her life.

Bina Paul

A 1983 graduate of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, Bina Paul has built a distinguished career spanning more than three decades as a film editor, director, producer, and festival programmer.

As an editor, she has worked with prominent Indian filmmakers and has received numerous state and national awards. Among the films in which she has worked are *Amma Ariyan* by John Abraham; *Agnisakshi* by Shyamaprasad; *Janmadinam* by Suma Josson; *Mitr, My Friend* by Revathi; *Dance Like a Man* by Pamela Rooks; *In Othello* by Roysten Abel; and *Daya* by Venu.

She has also built a career as a documentary filmmaker. Among her works is *The Sound of Silence*, which focuses on women in universities and has been screened at numerous national and international film festivals.

As an executive producer, she has also participated in various audiovisual campaigns focused on social and health issues, carrying out research, direction, and production tasks.

In addition to her work as a filmmaker, Bina Paul has served as artistic director of the Kerala International Film Festival and the Kerala International Short Film and Documentary Festival since their inception. She has served on juries at international festivals such as Berlin, Durban, Locarno, Romania, and Zanzibar, and regularly works as a film programmer and curator both in India and abroad.
