Literature, music, film, gastronomy, innovation, and technology will be featured throughout the week to give us a glimpse into the reality of Japan.
Curated by Yuko Morimoto, Director of Asian Studies at the Carlos III International School and Associate Dean for Student Affairs in the School of Humanities, Communication, and Documentation at UC3M, and Manuel Hidalgo Trenado,co-director of the Master’s Program in Geopolitics and Strategic Studies and associate vice president for internationalization at UC3M.

Mini-Workshop: Write Your Name in Japanese
Did you know that Japanese uses three different types of characters at the same time? In this dynamic and accessible micro-workshop, we’ll explore how the Japanese writing system—hiragana, katakana, and kanji—works and uncover the secrets behind writing them. By the end, you’ll learn how to write your own name in Japanese and take home your signature in Japanese style!

This micro-workshop offers an engaging introduction to the Japanese language, using anime and manga as teaching tools. Through scenes and comic strips, we’ll learn everyday expressions frequently used by our favorite characters, while exploring cultural aspects found in these forms of visual storytelling. No prior knowledge is required—just curiosity and a desire to learn while having fun.

If you’re one of those people who thinks sashimi is a Japanese motorcycle brand and wasabi is a martial art… this is the workshop for you!
We’re going to learn how to make maki, nigiri, uramaki, temaki, and oshi-sushi. We’ll also include a new Japanese-Iberian creation: fusion sushi that combines the two healthiest cuisines in the world.

Throughout the week, the student residence halls at Carlos III University of Madrid are joining in the celebration of UC3M’s Japanese Cultural Week by offering menus inspired by Japanese cuisine. It’s a way to take a culinary journey and experience Japanese culture through food, integrating the dining experience into everyday university life. Check out the menu here .
